Get to Know Dawson
Therapist in Austin, TX

Dawson Stanley, LPC, NCC
Pronouns: He/Him/His

Hey! My name is Dawson, and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Texas. My approach to counseling is to focus on emotions and identify negative patterns of interaction you have with yourself or with other people. I believe symptoms of depression, anxiety, or any other issues can not only affect you but also the people around you. I primarily utilize emotion-focused therapy techniques, as well as implementing techniques from other modalities, such as CBT and Motivational Interviewing. I also approach counseling with a trauma-informed lens, meaning I recognize there is a likelihood you have experienced some degree of trauma in your past or present. I particularly enjoy working with young adults and adults seeking to alleviate symptoms of depression or anxiety, restore broken relationships, or simply wanting greater insight into understanding how you think, feel, and behave.

How I Help

I know it can be difficult to take that first step and reach out for therapy and there are a lot of thoughts and opinions about whether you should or shouldn't. I want you to know that I hear and understand this.  During our sessions, I want to ensure you feel heard and understood. I believe that we all face unique challenges throughout our lives, some more intense or difficult to overcome than others. I place a high value on meeting you where you are. My approach to counseling focuses on creating a safe space for you to navigate these challenges, without judgment. I believe counseling works best when we both know where we are headed. We will figure out how to get there together. I strongly believe that collaboration is more than just a buzzword, it is a necessary part of reaching your goals. You do not have to face pains and challenges alone. I know therapy is helpful and provides a sense of relief and understanding. I also know that therapy can be an intense process sometimes. I will be there with you through the tough times and empower you to make changes in your life. I will show compassion and sincerity all along the way. I look forward to being a partner with you in the process of navigating the obstacles that life presents you. I know there is a way through. We will find that way together.

Areas of Focus

Let’s talk about what you can expect in our sessions. Our first couple of sessions is focused on getting to know each other. I want to understand you, from your point of view. I want to understand what is bringing you to therapy and what you want from therapy. It is important to me that we are developing a safe and trusting relationship and are on the same page. In addition to working with people who are struggling with anxiety and depression, I also provide therapy for people who experience difficulties with life changes and life transitions, attachment and relational issues, stress management, self-esteem, and personal growth.

As a man, I know it is difficult to reach out for help, specifically seeking out professional counseling help. We are expected to stifle our emotions, not show vulnerability, and stick within the confines of how we are "supposed" to act as men. But the pent-up thoughts and feelings have to go somewhere, right? Sometimes this can manifest itself through anger, distancing yourself from loved ones, and even physical complications, such as high blood pressure, headaches, and sleep issues. I want to acknowledge the fact you are here searching for a solution. Taking that first step is the hardest part. Even though it can be difficult to reach out, we are not meant to figure everything out by ourselves, despite what society may pressure us to do.  It's time to take the pressures of life off of yourself. By taking a deeper look at the emotions that have been buried, we will be able to work toward effectively communicating your needs. By gaining a greater awareness of how your emotions impact you and how societal pressures have negatively stressed your day-to-day life, we will be able to work together toward greater self-understanding, communication, and confidence. Confidence in not only who you are as a person, but also who you are as a man. When you are ready, I am here.

Man sitting at work desk, worrying. Discover how Dawson's compassionate anxiety therapy services in Austin, Texas, and online counseling in Texas provide support and guidance. Let Dawson help you navigate through anxiety, find coping strategies, and achieve a sense of calm and well-being.

Are you stuck in a cycle of worry? Are you finding yourself ruminating and feeling indecisive? Sometimes we feel out of control and drowning under the pressure of problems piling up. Maybe there is a level of fear present; fear of making a mistake or fear of disapproval. This cycle and pressure can contribute to you feeling stuck, uncertain, maybe even frozen. Not knowing what to do to find relief leads to feeling frustrated, which only exacerbates the cycle. I know it can be difficult finding the right steps to take to break free from anxiety and live the life you want to live. Desire to feel a sense of purpose for your life is something you don’t have to yearn for anymore. By listening and reflecting, I can help you untangle the mess you feel stuck in to ultimately restore your sense of control and confidence. I can help you by pausing to reflect on your thoughts and feelings to make sense of them again in the safety of a trusting relationship. We’ll develop coping skills to manage the overwhelming emotions and the weight that feels so heavy. Through therapy together, you will find you have greater clarity about your thoughts and feelings which will give you the ability to face your fears and worries. I know you can do it, and I will be there to encourage you along the way.

Depression is more than just feeling sad. Depression takes the joy out of life, the desire to engage with people, and your interests and hobbies. Depression makes it difficult to be productive and makes you feel stuck in a slump. It is like having a dark cloud following you around everywhere, hanging over you, making it difficult to see the light. Sometimes depression can make you feel hopeless and helpless, causing you to wonder if you will ever feel better. You may even feel like a burden to those around you. I know it is not easy to “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” and make changes. I know that it is often not helpful for people to tell you to just feel better or just do something. Depression looks and feels different for everybody. I am here to help you figure out what works best for you and find ways through this dark cloud. I will help you to demystify your symptoms of depression, identify triggers, and find coping skills that work for you. I understand with depression it is important to celebrate small victories along the way and there is no exact timeline to finding your light again. Therapy can be hard work, with challenges along the way, but I am with you. I will be here to encourage you, help knock down obstacles, and celebrate your progress as you reach a more fulfilling life.

A Bit About Me

I am Texas born and bred. My wife and I recently moved to Austin from the DFW metroplex to be closer to friends, extended family, and more opportunities to get out in nature (when not in the throws of Texas summers). My wife and I have a four-year-old Labradoodle named Poppy, and a toddler! My dog and son keep me plenty busy wanting to constantly play and run amok around the house. Other than chasing my dog or son around, I enjoy reading (particularly sci-fi, fantasy, and thrillers), watching TV shows and movies, and listening to music (bonus points if it’s live music). My family and friends are most important to me, and I love any chance I can get to spend time with them. My wife and I enjoy traveling, and we are always searching for new and unique experiences. If I’m not at home, I can usually be found at a local coffee shop or park.
